Care For Others
Devotional
Hebrews 1:3 teaches us that if we watch Jesus' life, we learn what God is like. Jesus is the radiance of God’s glory. When he came to the earth, he demonstrated that we were valuable to God because we were all made in the likness of God.
26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
JAMES 1:26-27
Questions:
- How is James using the term “religion” in verse 26? What is the difference in verse 27?
- Why is a person’s “religion” worthless if they don’t control what they say?
- What do you think James means “to keep oneself from being polluted by the world?” How can you accomplish this?
- In view of this passage, how might God be calling you to look after orphans and windows?
- How can this group help you to be mindful of those in distress?
Practice The Way of Jesus:
Throughout this passage, we are called to put others ahead of ourselves. Are there people in your life or in your community that God is calling you to put ahead of yourself? This week, consider praying for those who are in distress and seek to serve someone who is overlooked.
